One Atmosphere 33

This installation was presented during the 2023 FIT Sustainability and Business Conference and to the SUNY Board of Trustees. These presentations earned the Fellowship a grant for 2024!

OVERVIEW

My team and I worked within an intense time frame to build this installation from the ground up based off sketch models. We used a myriad of power tools in the FIT Spatial Experience Design lab (SED) with oversight and aid from the technician to concoct our piece. During the build, we identified the space's pain points during the event to ensure it would be seen by the masses.

This installation is only just 50% of the size that we were envisioning which in itself was a great feat to accomplish with more to come.

OUR OCEAN HOME

Building this was truly a wonderful experience! One of the more challenges we faced while building this was how to get the "wave" like structure of the book to look like a page flipping. But we figured it out by including notches within the frame. This made the structure of the book look almost like the airframe of an airplane.

POSTER DESIGN

PROCESS

Creating this project was absolute blast. Of course seeing it come to fruition was great but I really enjoyed the process.

However, some issues we encountered during the process was that the wood we used kept cracking. This is due to us deciding as a team to use recycled wood from previous students projects and unloved materials to make the installation as sustainable as possible. We remedied this issue (because we were determined to keep the project environmentally friendly) by putting wood glue in the notches and using pressure to reinforce the weak points.

This method was definitely a success because we were actually able to break down the installation piece by piece and move it from the ground floor of FIT to the 8th floor lobby in the Feldman building ready in time to present to the SUNY Board of Trustees! No wood was extremely harmed.

Using the CNC machine was a great experience! Once we knew exactly the shape that was needed for the "page" to be deep enough the be a wave, the CNC machine cut it in a breeze. Calibrating the machine was effortless and the wood we chose thankfully did not crack during this step.

The One Atmosphere 33 installation was an overall success!
